Telecommunications Provider — Demand Reduction at Mobility Sites

Telecommunications mobility sites are among the most energy-intensive commercial facilities per square foot in the built environment. DemandQ's Intelligent Demand Optimization platform reduced monthly energy bills by more than 10% across the provider's network — consistently, month over month.

Overview

A major telecommunications provider operating a network of mobility and cell sites recognized that energy costs represented a significant and growing operational expense. Unlike retail or office environments, these sites run critical network infrastructure 24 hours a day — creating a unique set of constraints and requirements for any energy management solution.

DemandQ's platform was evaluated and deployed for its ability to reduce demand and energy costs while protecting the reliability and availability of the critical equipment housed at each site.

The Problem

Extreme Energy Intensity Per Square Foot

Telecommunications mobility sites consume approximately 15 times more energy per square foot than a typical commercial office building. The cooling systems required to manage heat generated by active network equipment run at high utilization rates continuously — creating substantial demand peaks and elevated baseline consumption.

No Demand Management in Place

Across the site network, demand peaks were forming without detection or intervention. Each month's highest 15-minute power draw set the demand charge applied to the entire billing period — and without active management, those peaks were systematically higher than they needed to be.

Critical Infrastructure Constraints

Any energy management strategy had to be designed around one inviolable constraint: network equipment reliability cannot be compromised. Solutions that involved hard curtailment or setpoint changes that risked overheating active equipment were not acceptable.

The Solution

DemandQ's IDO platform was configured specifically for the telecommunications environment — with safeguards tuned to the thermal tolerance of active network equipment and the operational requirements of always-on infrastructure.

Equipment-Aware Optimization

DemandQ's platform was configured with the thermal operating parameters of the network equipment housed at each site. Cooling systems were optimized within the safe operating envelope — never in a way that could risk equipment overheating.

Continuous Monthly Bill Reduction

Rather than event-based curtailment, DemandQ's IDO delivered continuous, persistent demand reduction — reducing monthly bills by more than 10% consistently across the network, month after month.

Cooling System Coordination

The platform coordinated the operation of cooling units across each site to prevent simultaneous restarts and unnecessary load spikes — the same mechanism that drives results in retail and commercial environments, applied to the unique thermal dynamics of network facilities.

CO₂ Reduction Reporting

Verified CO₂ reduction data was produced for each site and aggregated at the portfolio level — supporting the provider's Scope 2 emissions reduction commitments.
