ADR Automation
DemandQ's ADR platform automates demand response participation end to end. It manages precooling, event response, and recovery, enabling sites of all sizes to participate in programs previously available only to large facilities.

Intelligent precooling with guaranteed curtailment and revenue maximization, delivering 100%+ curtailment compliance while eliminating the post-event peak rebounds that cost traditional participants thousands of dollars per event.
The Problem
Traditional demand response programs fail to deliver promised curtailment at the building level. Without precooling or intelligent load management, buildings simply shut equipment off during events, causing comfort complaints, operational disruptions, and inconsistent curtailment delivery.
Worse, when the event ends and equipment restarts simultaneously, a rebound demand peak forms that often exceeds the building’s normal peak. Published research has documented significant net losses per event for participants relying on traditional methods, after factoring in demand charges incurred from post-event rebound peaks.
Additionally, traditional program minimums exclude many commercial sites (small offices, fast-food restaurants, bank branches) that could collectively contribute significant grid flexibility.
Net loss figures are drawn from ASHRAE-published peer-reviewed research analyzing demand response performance across multiple building types and program structures. Research validated by independent measurement and verification protocols.
The Solution
DemandQ’s Automated Demand Response uses predictive modeling-driven precooling to prepare buildings before events begin. By storing thermal energy in advance, DemandQ guarantees 100%+ curtailment delivery while maintaining comfort, and prevents the post-event rebound that destroys traditional DR economics.
DemandQ's ADR platform automates demand response participation end to end. It manages precooling, event response, and recovery, enabling sites of all sizes to participate in programs previously available only to large facilities.
The RTD Hub is DemandQ's network backbone connecting program operators, aggregators, ISOs, and utilities with end-user sites. It provides the real-time communication infrastructure for fully automated curtailment dispatch at scale.
How It Works
DemandQ's RTD Hub receives the demand response event notification from the program operator, aggregator, or ISO. The system automatically classifies event type, duration, and curtailment target.
Prior to the event window, DemandQ activates predictive modeling-driven precooling. The building is cooled beyond normal setpoint using available HVAC capacity, storing thermal energy in structure and furnishings.
During the event, IDO's patented queuing technology manages load cycling to deliver the committed curtailment level. Comfort is maintained as the building coasts on stored thermal energy.
As the event ends, DemandQ's post-event algorithm manages the recovery ramp to prevent all equipment from restarting simultaneously, eliminating the rebound peak that plagues traditional DR participants.
IPMVP-compliant reports document curtailment delivery, revenue earned, and post-event performance for every event, providing the evidence base for incentive capture and program compliance.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Feature | Traditional DR | DemandQ ADR |
|---|---|---|
| Curtailment Delivery | Frequently fails (net average: negative) | 100%+ guaranteed |
| Pre/Post-Event Demand Peaks | Demand peaks can occur before or after the DR event | Prevented by precooling and recovery management |
| Net Revenue per Event | Revenue lost due to curtailment misses and/or offset by pre/post-event demand peaks | Full incentive value captured |
| Minimum Site Size | Large sites only | Sites of all sizes supported |
| Operational Impact | Setback / shutdown: operational disruption | No operational impact, behind the meter |
| Precooling | Manual or none | Predictive modeling-automated |

Key Benefits
Predictive modeling prepares buildings before each DR event. When the curtailment signal arrives, IDO's queuing technology maintains the building at setpoint while delivering 100%+ of the committed curtailment.
Demand peaks can occur both before and after a DR event. DemandQ ADR mitigates both, using predictive precooling to manage pre-event peaks and post-event recovery management to prevent the rebound surge that otherwise erases savings and triggers new demand charges.
Participants capture the full incentive value of every event. DemandQ's approach eliminates the net losses that traditional DR participants experience from post-event rebounds and failed curtailment.
DemandQ enables sites of all sizes to participate in demand response programs previously inaccessible to smaller facilities, dramatically expanding program enrollment for aggregators.
Predictive models analyze weather forecasts, occupancy schedules, and building thermal mass to calculate the optimal precooling ramp for each event, storing energy in the building structure itself.
The Real-Time Demand Hub connects program operators, aggregators, ISOs, and utilities with end-user sites for fully automated curtailment dispatch, with no manual intervention required.
